BIO
Few entertainers bring to their performances the bright array of talents Monica Perry commands. In the spotlight since she was five years old, this Vanderbilt University honors graduate and many-time beauty queen is a country singer who also shines as a songwriter, fiddle player, fashion model, dancer and actress. She doesn’t just dabble in these arts, mind you, she masters them. Like Naomi Judd, Perry has a delicate China-doll beauty that belies rawhide strength and warrior determination.
Throughout high school, Perry sang and played fiddle three nights a week in the Yellow Rose Express, a band whose wide-ranging repertoire embraced western swing, traditional country standards and new country hits. She also made regular appearances on the Johnny High Country Music Revue in Fort Worth and at several other Opry-style showcases around Texas.
Perry’s television appearances in the Miss Texas Pageants, during which she enchanted audiences with her fiddle playing, earned her many invitations to perform. As a consequence, she began playing on shows with major country artists, including club dates with Clint Black and Doug Supernaw in the Houston area, in Dallas with LeAnn Rimes, the Cajun Fest with Patty Loveless and Frenchie Burke (also in Houston,) at Gilley’s with Johnny Gimble and in Port Arthur, Texas, with Marie Osmond, Bob Hope and Floyd Cramer.
She recalls hearing Glen Campbell sing “Rhinestone Cowboy” when she was seven and becoming a country-music convert on the spotan enthusiasm that has not diminished since. Soon after, Perry started studying piano. Around the same time, she saw Charlie Daniels playing fiddle at the Houston Livestock Show and was so impressed by his music that she instantly added fiddle lessons to her wall-to-wall regimen. Since then, Monica has also added Banjo and Guitar to her musical repertoire.
Perry was also 11 when she entered her first beauty pageant. She would compete in more than 100 such events while still a teenager and continued to win titles throughout her college years. One of the prizes in an early contest was a trip to Nashville’s week-long country-music extravaganza. Dazzled by Fan Fair’s star power and general sense of excitement, Perry and her family returned for the next 10 years.
Perry has acted for television and film as well, with roles in the syndicated series Missing Reward, CMT’s Most Wanted Live and a promotional film still being shown at the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville. She was a featured extra in the recently released Robert Redford film, The Last Castle, as well as in commercials for Bi-Lo Supermarkets and the Tennessee Lottery. In addition, she found a “second-calling” as a fitness host on The Shop At Home Network from 2005-2008.
Monica's list of musical influences is as varied and broad-ranging as her talent. Bob Wills, Asleep at the Wheel, Glen Campbell, Rodney Crowell, Steve Earle, Lyle Lovett, Bonnie Raitt, Steve Wariner and John Cowan of New Grass Revival fame -- each has provided a score for her life and, therefore, helped her to develop her unique musical identity.
Perry, a fifth-generation Texan, still claims Texas as her home but rates Nashville right up there with it. She states, "First of all, there is an undeniable Tennessee/Texas connection. Having been born and raised in Houston, Nashville feels very much like a small town to me. I just adore the people, the small town feel and the incredible creative environment. I have found my place in a wonderful family of songwriters, producers and artists here. I will always feel right at home in Nashville."
And Nashville has welcomed her with open arms. Perry has established her own music publishing company and has since been active in co-writing and building her catalog of songs. As a songwriter, she has had multiple cuts that have been released both in the United States and Europe. Most recently, The Marshall Tucker Band has released “The Guitar Playing Man” a song she co-wrote with her dear friend, George McCorkle -- on their recent album “The Next Adventure.” In addition, she has released a 5-song EP, available on this website, and will be touring in Spring 2010 throughout Texas and Beyond Stay “tuned” for more details
